In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that both parties accept a £5 weekly basic-pay increase from 16 August and a £100 voucher for claimants in lieu of retrospection. The recommendation was signed on 15 August 1990. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and Brinks Allied Limited were also asked to agree to voluntary redundancies, negotiate productivity schemes linked to a further £5 weekly increase when the company reached break-even, and call off the union's proposed industrial action. The Court said threatened action could lead to closure and job losses.
