In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept Atlantic Mills Limited’s proposal for implementing a 39-hour week at its Longford plant. The recommendation was signed on 31 July 1990. The union sought an hour of accumulated time off each week for about 200 four-cycle shift workers. The company proposed keeping existing arrangements and paying one hour’s overtime weekly. The Court said accumulated time off would require equivalent overtime cover, with high costs and production difficulties, and recommended 1 July 1990 as the application date.
