In 1989, the Labour Court found an element of unfairness in the selection of a Tallaght Post Office worker for dismissal and recommended compensation equal to two weeks’ wages. The recommendation was signed on 10 July 1989. The postmistress said she had to let one full-time employee go after An Post reduced her payment, and argued another employee was more capable. The worker disputed that her work was unsatisfactory and said she was not the most junior member of staff. The Court concluded the dismissal resulted largely from the cut in the postmistress’s payment and that the worker’s seniority made her selection unfair in part. It also urged the employer to complete the worker’s tax affairs promptly.
