In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Bord Na Mona pay staff superannuation contributions for half the period of the Croghan Briquette Works lay-offs. The recommendation was signed on 29 June 1989. The Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland sought the application of terms agreed for earlier lay-offs. Bord Na Mona said it had not sought the November 1988 lay-offs, which followed the union’s refusal to co-operate with its proposed stock transfer. The Court said the lay-offs could have been postponed if the union had co-operated, but poor sales meant they would likely have happened later. It recommended contributions for half the period.
