The Labour Court recommended that workers accept Savage Smyth’s transport-section rationalisation package, including £20,000 compensation to be shared among the employees concerned. The package also included redundancy pay of three weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements, and discussions on bonus changes. The recommendation was signed on 6 January 1989. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union sought improved compensation and redundancy terms for the 22 transport employees. Savage Smyth had withdrawn its earlier £10,000 compensation offer. The Court recommended acceptance of the package it set out.
