In 1988, the Labour Court recommended phased reductions in fixed overtime for University College Cork maintenance workers: one hour a day for three days from 1 January 1989, then one hour for two days from 1 April 1989. The recommendation was signed on 11 December 1988. The dispute involved the Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians, Electrical Trades Union, Irish Transport and General Workers Union, and Plumbing Trade Union. The unions said workers had relied on the longstanding overtime arrangement and would lose earnings. The college said budget cuts required savings and it had decided against forced redundancies.
