In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that the Marine Port And General Workers' Union accept Brother International Corporation (Ireland) Limited's offer to apply Programme for National Recovery terms from 1 July 1988 for about nine service-department employees. The recommendation was signed on 14 December 1988. The union had sought a £15 across-the-board increase, arguing its members' pay lagged comparable employments. The company said its trading position and rising costs meant it could not offer more than the national terms. The Court considered the company's offer appropriate and recommended that the union accept it.
