In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's claim for the maintenance craftsman's rate for a worker employed as a painter/porter at the National Maternity Hospital. The recommendation was signed on 8 July 1988. The union said the worker's painting duties justified the higher rate. Hospital management said his duties had not changed and cited the established painter/porter arrangement and the hospital's financial position. The Court referred to the history of the applicable rate in declining to recommend the claim.
