In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding a claim for compensation after four Gypsum Industries P.L.C. workers lost regular overtime when the company ended its night shift. The recommendation was signed on 15 December 1987. The Amalgamated Engineering Union and Electrical Trades Union said the overtime was rostered and compulsory. The company said the move to two-shift working followed a 25% reduction in raw-material demand amid a recession in the building industry and other trading factors. The Court accepted that the overtime loss arose directly from a recession in the company's business.
