The Labour Court recommended redundancy payments for eight workers at Santry Engineering Company Limited at twice the statutory entitlement, plus an amount equal to 60% of that entitlement. The recommendation was signed on 7 July 1987. The National Engineering and Electrical Trade Union had sought six weeks’ pay per year of service on top of statutory redundancy entitlement, arguing that alternative work was scarce and the company’s offer was inadequate. Santry Engineering said losses and falling sales meant it could not afford a settlement based on weeks of pay per year of service.
