The Labour Court recommended sharing available work across the workforce at Noel Hanlon Ireland Limited, provided production targets and quality standards were met at no additional cost. The recommendation was signed on 24 March 1987. Noel Hanlon Ireland Limited had temporarily laid off 85 workers after a shortage of work and selected a smaller team to produce the reduced output. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union argued the available work should be shared and undertook that targets and quality could be maintained. The Court recommended a three-month trial, after which the existing arrangement could resume if the trial did not work out.
