The Workplace Relations Commission recommended €1,500 for a worker after finding an employer’s redundancy process unfair. The recommendation, dated 28 January 2026, followed the worker’s dismissal from his Quantity Surveyor role. The employer said a commercial review found there was not enough work to sustain a full-time Quantity Surveyor in the region and that the role had not been replaced. The WRC accepted that the job ended by reason of redundancy because the business need for the role had ceased or diminished. But it found the worker had not been told about the strategy review or the risk to his job before being informed at a meeting on 20 May 2024. The worker attended alone, and the WRC gave no weight to his signature accepting the decision because redundancy was raised for the first time at that meeting. The worker found other employment relatively quickly, and the WRC recommended €1,500 as a gesture of goodwill.
