In 1999, the Labour Court amended a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation in a severance dispute between Coras Iompair Eireann and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association. The Court recommended that CIE concede added years of service for the worker’s pension, citing the circumstances and the absence of a written agreement when his employment was extended. The Association appealed after the Group Chief Executive’s post was abolished and he was declared redundant from 1 May 1998. It sought alternative work or voluntary severance terms, including added pension years. CIE argued that added years were not part of the 1998 agreement. The Court also said the lump sum should be reduced by salary paid between 1 May 1998 and 30 April 1999. Its decision was signed on 19 October 1999.
