In 1991, on the Services Industrial Professional And Technical Union's appeal, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner's £1,316 recommendation concerning a Waterford County Council worker's lost earnings. The decision was signed on 30 September 1991. The worker, a waterworks caretaker, had also collected water charges on commission. The Rights Commissioner recommended £516 for real loss, £200 for telephone costs and £600 for office costs. The union argued that this fell short of its £10,000 claim and said the worker declined a full-time revenue collector post because it would worsen his conditions. The Council said he had declined a post that would not have caused a substantial earnings loss. The Labour Court said it was difficult to assess his potential loss and left the recommendation in place.
