In 1991, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that Beaumont Hospital pay a worker £750 in an acting-up dispute. The decision was dated 31 December 1991. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had appealed the recommendation on the worker’s behalf. A grade I chef, he covered the head chef’s duties during absences. The hospital said he did not meet the four-continuous-week rule for an acting-up allowance and offered a one-off payment instead. The Court said the regulations did not cover acting up on the regular basis described and recommended reviewing the issue across staff in similar situations. In the meantime, it decided the Rights Commissioner’s award should be implemented.
