In 1988, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner's recommendation that Dublin Plant Hire make additional redundancy payments to three former employees. The decision, following appeals by the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union and the Construction Industry Federation on the company's behalf, was signed on 1 March 1988. The Rights Commissioner had recommended an extra 30% of statutory redundancy payments for each of the three claimants. The union argued that an earlier 60% recommendation for another worker had been intended to apply to all four. Dublin Plant Hire said that earlier recommendation was made on compassionate grounds for that individual and was not a general agreement.
