Labour Court rejects appeal over paid time for safety course

The Labour Court disallowed a worker’s appeal over support for a safety course, affirming the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation. Its decision was dated 16 March 2004. Abs Pumps Limited paid €1,150 for the course and books and offered to reschedule the worker’s hours without loss of pay. The worker, a safety representative, chose to attend in his own time. The Court found it reasonable for the company to assess courses chosen by employees individually and said a team leader choosing a course not required by the company would have been treated the same way.
