Plans unveiled to turn historic Louth Bank of Ireland building into apartments

By Olivia Ryan, Irish Independent

The former Bank of Ireland building on Park Street in Dundalk is poised for redevelopment under new plans that would see it converted into a modern apartment complex.

Park Street SPV Limited lodged a planning application with Louth County Council for the development at 16 Park Street, which is listed as a protected structure.

The historic building, which went up for sale in 2024, was designed for the Bank of Ireland by George Halpin around 1845. At the time it was traditional for the bank manager to reside above the branch. It was subsequently remodelled in the first part of the twentieth century.

Following its closure as a bank branch it was reopened as a casino, but had been vacant for a number of years before it went up for sale.

Park Street SPV has applied for permission for the change of use of the existing four-storey building from offices to 13 apartments, and an extension at the lower ground floor to enclose an existing undercroft area.

The redevelopment of the building would include four two – bedroom apartments, six one – bedroom apartments and three studio apartments.

The works would also include replacement of existing non-original windows, reinstatement of lower ground floor window at front, replacement of timber coach gates with metal gates, AOV smoke vent above stairs, alteration to non-original railings at front, re-painting external walls, provision of balconies at side and rear of raised ground floor level, demolition of part of roof over side passageway at west of building, demolition of external fire escape at rear, alterations to existing drainage, boundary treatment, parking for bicycles, bin storage, landscaping, solar panels on rear roof and all associated works.
