Jail warning for mother of six with multiple no insurance convictions

By Francis Carroll, Independent.ie

“Next time you are going to jail, children or no children,” a judge has warned a mother of six with previous uninsured driving convictions.

Judge Stephanie Coggans said no lessons had been learned by Thulisile Ezelda Ngubeni (44) as she sentenced her to two months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

The defendant, of Ath Lethan, Racecourse Road, Dundalk, also received a five-year driving disqualification after she admitted having neither insurance nor licence at Marian Park, Dundalk, on July 11, 2025.

The district court was told of four previous no insurance convictions.

Solicitor Peter Lavery said that he had explained to his client the court’s options which did not just include being banned.

The mother of six children, aged between five and 26, was very worried about it.

Ms Ngubeni was very sorry and knew how serious it was, Mr Lavery added.

Judge Coggans said that no lessons had been learned.

"This is shocking. We all have to abide by the rules of the road.”

The judge continued that next time the defendant will be going to jail, children or no children.

"It gives me no pleasure in saying that.”

Ms Ngubeni was also fined €200 for driving without a licence.

Bail in the event of an appeal was set at a personal bond of €300.
