Dumping ‘blackspot’ raises alarm near Dundalk school and family centre

Serious dumping issues are emerging at a “blackspot” close to the Redeemer Family Resource Centre in Dundalk, a meeting of local councillors heard this week.
Cllr. Antoin said a number of people had raised concerns about dumping at the site, which is also in the vicinity of St. Brigid’s School.
He added that an alleyway in the area had attracted “a significant amount of illegal dumping,” and asked if the location could be added to the rotating anti-dumping CCTV scheme.
Senior Executive Engineer, Paddy Callan, said he would raise the matter with the council’s environment section to look at how to tackle dumping at the location.
He added that the CCTV scheme does seem to deter dumping when the cameras are installed, but once they are moved to another site the problems resume over time.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Robbie Nash added that there are a number of locations across Dundalk which were common dumping spots.
He called on the council to continually monitor areas that have been flagged, saying that people are “less likely to dump in an area that is clean” than one which is already attracting rubbish.
