The Liberties to get makeover as Meath Street upgrade commences

The Liberties is getting a makeover as improvement works are set to begin next week.
The Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme is scheduled to commence construction works on February 9. Dublin City Council has announced that one of Dublin 8’s most historic and vibrant retail areas is set for a major upgrade.
The enhancement works include widening footpaths, planting up to fifteen new street streets, upgrading the public lighting, and adding new street furniture and public seating. As a street known for its iconic Liberty Market, Meath Street powerfully represents the unique character of the Liberties.
“Today marks an important step forward for Meath Street and for Dublin 8. Meath Street has long been one of the Liberties’ most lively and much loved streets, rich in character, community and local enterprise,” Lord Mayor Councillor Ray McAdam stated following the announcement.
“This public realm scheme will enhance the street for everyone who uses it, creating a safer, more welcoming and more attractive place to live, work, shop and spend time.
“I want to thank residents, businesses and traders for their patience and cooperation as works get underway. When complete, this investment will make a real and lasting difference for the Liberties, strengthening Meath Street as a great city street for years to come”
Cairn Construction has been appointed the main contractor for the works, which will be carried out in 13 phases. Beginning with the eastern footpath between the Coombe and Carmen’s Hall, from there, works will progress northwards along Meath Street.
The works will begin with the excavation of trial holes to confirm the location of underground services on Monday before full construction commences on February 16. The entire project will take approximately 20 months to complete.
Cairn Construction will be responsible for maintaining regular communication with residents, businesses, and stakeholders throughout the duration of the works to ensure timely updates and minimise disruption. A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said they are working “to deliver a renewed and improved Meath Street for all who live, work, and visit the area.”
