The Dublin City councillors who voted for and against social housing rent hike

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

The Dublin City Council budget was narrowly passed by a single vote last night , with councillors predictably split along party lines.

The main point of division related to rent increases for those in social housing, which sparked widespread outrage and even protests among affected tenants . With a tally of 31 in favour of the budget and 30 against, these rent increases are due to commence from April 6, 2026.

Representatives from Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, the Green Party, Labour, and former Fianna Fail Independent Councillor Niall Ring all voted in favour of the budget. Several of these councillors argued that the rent increases were necessary in order to make up for the over 50 million shortfall in the Council’s housing maintenance budget.

Sinn Fein , Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and the rest of the Independent councillors voted against the proposed budget. They argued it was unfair to put the burden of the Council’s lack of funding on the most vulnerable members of society.

A proposed amendment from People Before Profit councillors Conor Reddy and Hazel de Nortuin, which sought to raise rates not on tenants but on the city’s largest businesses, was rejected with a tally of 31 against and 29 in favour.
