Over 12,000 homeless in Dublin this October, new figures show

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

There are now a record 12,024 people without a home in Dublin .

New figures released by the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive reveal that as of the end of October 2025 over 12,000 individuals are classified as homeless in the capital. This includes 3,883 children.

Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council Councillor Daithi Doolan described the figures as “totally shocking and unacceptable.” There are now 3,883 homeless children in Dublin , that is an increase of 435 from this time last year. Each homeless child is a stain on this government’s record in office,” he said

“There has been a 16% increase in the number of families in the past twelve months entering homelessness. The Minister for Housing should hang his head in shame. These families are homeless as a direct result of Minister James Brown’s failing housing policy. He must go before the situation gets any worse for Dublin.

“The biggest cause of homelessness for families is landlords evicting them from private rented accommodation. This accounted for 35% of all families entering homelessness. We are now reaping a very sorry harvest because of Minister Browne’s callous cuts to the Tenant In Situ scheme. This increase is a direct result of Minister Browne’s decision to stop funding for the scheme.”

Cllr Doolan said the Tenant In Situ scheme had previously been very successful in “preventing hundreds of families from becoming homeless.” He commended the way the scheme allowed local authorities to buy homes off landlords “who otherwise would have evicted tenants.”

“Sinn Féin demand an immediate reinstatement of funding for the Tenant In Situ scheme. We call for the reintroduction of the no fault eviction ban and the urgent release of funding to Dublin’s local authorities to allow for a massive council house building programme that meets the needs of the people not the developers or landlords,” he said.

As “each passing day the homeless crisis continues to deepen,” Cllr Doolan is calling for “immediate and radical change in government housing policy.” He called for action in stopping “more families entering homelessness.”
