Old school and vacant funeral home set to be transformed into homes in Drimnagh

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

An application for Part 8 planning for 38 new homes in Drimnagh looks set to move forward at next Monday’s Dublin City Council monthly meeting.

These new homes will be social housing and will be managed by Dublin City Council at Crumlin Road/Rafters Lane in Dublin 12. They will be located at the site of a vacant funeral home and the Ardscoil Eanna buildings.

Consisting of ten one-bedroom homes, 22 two-bedroom homes, and six three-bedroom homes, the development also includes the provision of a landscaped communal courtyard garden. With building heights ranging from three to four storeys, a Part 8 was previously granted for the destruction of the existing buildings.

Internal consultations have brought up no objections relating to drainage, transport, or archaeological issues for the development. The development will see the construction of a new ESB substation.

The eastern area of this site is also part of a permitted library to be developed on Crumlin Road. This will be located within the site of the former Ard Scoil Eanna secondary school.

Local councillor Ray Cunningham has welcomed the development as an excellent use of a site that has been empty for far too long. “There’s such a huge need for housing in the city, so it’s wonderful to see this going up.”

Cllr Cunningham praised the development as a great example of council-led project that’s not reliant on private developers. “It’s going to social housing and housing for people who need it most. It’s fantastic and great to see it.”
