New bike lockers installed in Dublin city that are free to use for two hours

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

Dublin City Council has introduced new bike lockers around the city that are free to use for the first two hours.

As part of a pilot project supported by the National Transport Authority, DCC has installed a further 24 cycle-lockers of different types in the city-centre. This includes 12 lockers in Jervis Street Car Park and 12 lockers in Drury St Car Park, in addition to the six lockers already on Capel St and the six on Grafton St.

These lockers are intended for short-term use, enabling visitors to securely park their bikes for a few hours while they socialise, shop, dine, or explore the city.. The lockers are different to the Bike Bunkers that are being rolled out separately to provide secure cycle parking in residential areas.

Instructions on how to use a cycle locker will be displayed on its door. It will generally involve downloading an app and creating an account. There is no charge for using the lockers for the first two hours. After that there is a charge of €2 per hour, up to a maximum charge of €12 per day.

Over the next 12 months, Dublin City Council , with the assistance of Bleeper who are managing the trial on our behalf, will monitor how the different types of lockers and Apps perform and the level of demand for this type of service.

Alec Dundon Senior Executive Engineer, City Centre Projects, Dublin City Council said: ”Installing these cycle lockers lets us see how secure short‑term bike parking works in busy urban spaces. This pilot will help us understand where lockers are most effective and how people use them, shaping future cycling infrastructure that is practical, reliable and supports more people to feel confident cycling into the city for short trips.”

The occupancy of the lockers will be monitored and the charges adjusted to keep them as attractive as possible while continuing to discourage long term stays. The council is encouraging the public to share their views on the pilot project by following this link .
