'Lights for Bikes' campaign encourages cyclists to 'Be Seen' this winter

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

As the winter evenings grow darker, Dublin’s local authorities have launched a major cyclist safety campaign.

The ‘Lights for Bikes’ campaign brings together Dublin ’s fourth local authorities who are encouraging cyclists to ensure they use their front and rear lights to stay safe on Irish roads. With less visibility during the winter months, it’s absolutely essential that all road users are made aware of any cyclists.

This campaign brings together Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam with the Mayor of South Dublin Councillor Pamela Kearns, Mayor of Fingal Councillor Tom O’Leary, and An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown Councillor Jim Gildea in a show of unity across the Greater Dublin Area.

Lord Mayor McAdam highlighted cycling as “an increasingly popular and sustainable way to get around our city,” he stressed this comes with safety risks. “As the days get shorter, being visible is vital,” he said.

“A simple set of lights can make all the difference in staying safe on the roads. I am delighted to join with my fellow Mayors across Dublin in supporting this important message.”

Assistant Director for Sustainable Transport Development at the National Transport Authority Joe Seymour also pointed out the importance of front and rear lights as an essential part of staying safe on the road. “The NTA is proud to once again support the ‘Lights for Bikes’ campaign, reminding everyone that a simple action—switching on your lights—can make a big difference in preventing collisions,” he said.

With the simple act of turning on bike lights, cyclists reduce their risk of collisions and ensure they remain visible to drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. The “Lights for Bikes” will run throughout the winter months, amplified through social media and local authority channels, supported by visuals and awareness materials carrying the slogan: “Be Bright. Be Seen. Be Safe.”

As a campaign that reflects a united approach to road safety across all of Dublin, this collaborative initiative brings together local authorities, national agencies, and community partners to reduce road-related incidents and create safer streets for all.
