Guide to applying for on-street parking with Dublin City Council

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

There are few things more frustrating than paying for parking outside your own home - meaning a residential parking permit is essential for those living on a road with pay-and-display fees.

However, in order to gain an on-street parking permit, drivers must first apply with Dublin City Council. This can feel like a daunting task for those unfamiliar with online applications, and it can often be difficult to find exactly what’s required to put forward a successful application.

Eligibility for a residential parking permit is determined by the Dublin City Council Parking Control Bye Laws, and those in receipt of a permit must be registered at their usual address. That means they live or reside overnight at the stated address more than 183 nights per year.

To apply for a residential parking permit some key documents must be submitted. These include:

Applicants should also note the documents that will not be accepted by the council. Ineligible documentation include temporary insurance certificates, international motor insurance cards (Green Cards), insurance discs or insurance schedules, and insurance renewal notices or receipts and letters instead of the insurance certificate.

An employee with a company car or a private car insured by the company should also provide the following: A copy of the Vehicle Licensing Certificate, the company insurance certificate, a letter from the company stating that they employ you, your address, and the vehicle registration number.

A residential parking permit also includes fees which change depending on circumstances. There’s a fee of €400 for one year or €750 for two years if the building contains more than four housing units, has off-road parking available to it, and is in a low-demand zone.

The same fee of €400 for one year or €750 for two years also applies if the building is a converted house, contains more than four housing units, has off-road parking available to it, and is in a heavy-demand zone. However, first time applicants can receive the permit for €50 for one year and €80 for two years.
