Gaeilge365 to create a truly bilingual Dublin through Irish language initiatives

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

It might be time to dust off those old Leaving Cert notes, as Dublin makes major strides toward its goal of becoming a truly bilingual capital.

At yesterday’s monthly meeting of Dublin City Council , which was appropriately held entirely in the Irish language, an update was presented on Gaeilge365. This initiative endeavours to transform the Republic’s first official language into an engine for community connection, creativity, economic growth, and improved public services.

Building on the government’s commitment to scale the programme nationally, the results for 2025 show significant growth:

Programme Manager Daithí de Buitléir outlined the past year's achievements, focusing on four key pillars: Skills for the future, building brief, embedding impact, and sustainable structures.

Gaeilge365 has supported several programmes that are driving a cultural shift when it comes to the use of the Irish language outside of just an educational environment .

New examples of public-service innovation are proving that a bilingual Dublin is both possible and beneficial:

The initiative is seeing tangible results in education, sport, and the local economy:
