Family friendly event to take place on College Green as permanent plaza designs are drawn up

College Green in Dublin city centre will play host to a range of free family-friendly activities this Sunday, September 21, as yoga, craft activities, live music and children’s entertainment fill the space.

Grow College Green, which will take place from noon until 4pm, is a way of showcasing how the space could be used when it’s fully pedestrianised as designs are drawn up for the permanent plaza, Dublin City Council (DCC) said.

Taking place on European Mobility Week’s Car-Free Day, cars will not be able to travel down College Green or Dame Street while festivities are ongoing.

In a statement announcing the event, DCC said the historic centre of the city would be showcased, as it would be upon completion of the plaza, and highlight its potential once full-time pedestrianisation is in place.

Speaking to Dublin councillors last week, Marie Galvin, project manager for the College Green project, said: “It’s just to show people what the opportunities are if we get the space back and give it to the people and what we can do within it.”

She said Grow College Green would be similar to the Summer Sundays on College Green events that ran in previous years, which incorporated street performances, stilt walkers, jugglers and picnic furniture into the area.

Ms Galvin added that the plaza was currently in the preliminary design stage, with the council hoping to unveil concrete plans by the end of the year.

However, construction of the plaza wouldn’t be completed until at least 2030.

Grow College Green is a non-ticketed event, and the full list of activities taking place on the day is:

Yoga masterclasses and community drum workshops

Live music and children’s entertainment

Heritage storytelling and interpretive experiences

Zones themed around project values: breathe, connect, imagine and evolve
