Dublin’s free 'summer adventure' reading challenge returns for kids of all ages

Dublin’s young readers are being invited to take part in a ‘summer adventure’ as a free reading challenge returns to libraries across the city.
Dublin City Council Libraries are taking part in Summer Stars, the free national reading programme for children in all public libraries and online from June to the end of August. With kids invited to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading, this non-competitive initiative encourages young readers and every child who reads even one book/e-book is regarded as having completed the programme.
Children and parents are invited to live up to the wise words of Dr Seuss, “the more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,” by making use of the great services the library offers . Either by stopping into their local branch or signing up to the library’s Borrowbox app, there are thousands of books to choose from when compiling a summer reading list.
Children can track their reading progress with reading cards which can be marked each time a book is read, online or in print form. These are available from your local library or for download. A reviews section on the library’s website even allows readers to upload their views on their favourite books.
Plenty of online activities will be advertised across libraries social media pages and children can even attend Summer Stars Storytime sessions, with live readers delivered by library staff. For children hoping to break out of a reading slump, Dublin City Council Libraries have even compiled several top tips for young readers.
The summer months provide an ideal opportunity for children to take time to find books they really enjoy and experience reading as an activity which is fun and a source of entertainment. Access to books and reading for pleasure is also known to have many long-term benefits, as children who develop an interest in reading have been found to have greater self-esteem, creativity, and better social outcomes.
Summer Stars provides an opportunity to explore children’s books for all ages through reading, listening to audio books, and enjoying online story times, as well as to take part in fun online quizzes and letting imagination grow through the short story competition called An Unexpected Adventure.
