Dublin City Council open €2 million in funding for local climate action projects

By Stephen Holland, DublinLive

Nearly €2 million in funding is available to community groups committed to supporting locally led climate action projects in Dublin .

Dublin City Council have launched Phase 2 of their Community Climate Action Programme. This is supported by a €1,938,000 allocation for projects addressing greenhouse gas emissions, climate resilience, and a transition to a low-carbon economy.

With three ties of funding available, groups can request a grant for 100% of funding for small projects up to €20,000, medium projects up to €50,000, and large projects up to €100,000. These can relate to projects addressing multiple themes including sustainable travel, food, waste, shopping, and recycling.

Phase 1 the programme has already seen 50 community groups contribute to the sustainability of Dublin city. This includes the installation of solar panels, LED lighting, and building insulation.

Other funded projects relate to bicycle infrastructure and water refill stations, creating wildlife habitats, ponds, and tree planting schemes, as well as reducing flood risks through rainwater harvesting and rain gardens. As a competitive process, proposals that integrate multiple themes will be more likely to succeed.

Dublin City Council have cited project ideas like a community fridge, repair hubs, and swap shops as examples of viable proposal topics. Low carbon technologies and community EV charging points are examples of desired project topics.

Initiatives that support nature whilst building climate resilience, such as tree planting and sustainable urban drainage initiatives, also align with programme's goals. Those considering applying should note this is not an exhaustive list and groups are encouraged to be creative in their proposal approach.

The programme officially launches on Tuesday, October 21, where interested community groups can submit their expression of interest via the Dublin City Council Citizen Hub. Interested applicants are encouraged to seek support from Dean Eaton and the Climate Action Team in Dublin City Council to develop their proposals.

Full applications must be submitted by Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
