Yusuf Ali Abdi granted miscarriage ruling over infant son murder

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Yusuf Ali Abdi was granted a miscarriage of justice certificate by the Central Criminal Court on 2 September 2020 after his infant son murder conviction was quashed and a retrial ended in a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity. The original killing occurred at an apartment in Clane, County Kildare, in 2001.

The court said newly discovered psychiatric evidence established that Mr Abdi had schizophrenia at the time, and approved his application after he had spent 16 years in prison. He was given leave to seek compensation from the State, while the court awarded his defence team their costs.

This case may have concluded differently. The outcome has not yet been confirmed by a public source we could find.
