Yusif Ali Abdi was granted a miscarriage of justice certificate over his murder conviction by the Central Criminal Court on 2 September 2020, allowing him to seek compensation from the State.
The conviction followed his 2003 trial for the murder of his 20-month-old son, Nathan Baraka Andrew Ali, at an apartment in Clane on 17 April 2001. He spent 16 years in prison before the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction on 13 February 2019 and ordered a retrial.
At the retrial, he was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity and was committed to the Central Mental Hospital in December 2019. The Central Criminal Court later granted the miscarriage of justice application, giving him leave to seek compensation.
