By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Wayne Dundon and Nathan Killeen were on trial at the Special Criminal Court for the murder of Roy Collins at Coin Castle Amusements, Roxboro Road Shopping Centre, Limerick, on 9 April 2009. Both men had pleaded not guilty. The proceedings were reported on 21 June 2014.

The non-jury court heard that Roy Collins, 35, was working around noon when a gunman entered his amusement arcade and fired a shot. He was hit in the chest and died in hospital shortly afterwards.

The prosecution case was that Wayne Dundon directed the murder from prison, Nathan Killeen was the getaway driver and James Dillon was the gunman.

Gareth Collins had testified that Wayne Dundon offered him €20,000 by telephone from his prison cell to participate in the murder. Gareth Collins said he repeatedly refused.

Gareth Collins was recalled on 20 June 2014 after it emerged that he had also implicated Wayne Dundon in the 2002 murder of Brian Fitzgerald, although Wayne Dundon was in prison that night.

Explaining his earlier account, Gareth Collins said he hid under a bed after seeing a car arrive because he did not want to participate. He said he had not seen Wayne Dundon enter the house; his mother had told him that Wayne Dundon had come in.

Michael O’Higgins SC, prosecuting, told the witness that research indicated Wayne Dundon was in custody from April 2002 until after Brian Fitzgerald’s murder that November. Gareth Collins said this was the first time he had heard Wayne Dundon was imprisoned that night.

Under cross-examination, Gareth Collins agreed he had probably lied to gardaí when arrested after Brian Fitzgerald’s murder. He also agreed his account to gardaí concerning Roy Collins’s murder differed from his evidence in court.
