High Court seeks more information from Greece before ruling on Jeremiah O'Brien extradition

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The High Court adjourned Jeremiah O’Brien’s extradition case until 8 July, seeking further information from Greek authorities before deciding whether he should be surrendered on a human trafficking charge. He was remanded on bail.

The court heard concerns about overcrowding and violence in Greek prisons, including that one prison had been recorded at 164% capacity. The State said Greece needed to address the risks raised about the conditions O’Brien could face. The judge said Greece should have the opportunity to respond, and the parties agreed to write to the authorities seeking answers about where and in what conditions he would be held.

O’Brien is alleged to have helped facilitate the attempted smuggling of 66 people to Italy by speedboat in 2017. The allegation has not been determined in this extradition hearing.
