Waldemar Solowiow has lost his Supreme Court appeal against his murder conviction. The proceedings were reported on 14 February 2018.
He had denied murdering Mary Ryan but pleaded guilty to her manslaughter at their flat on Sherrard Street Upper, Dublin, between May 18th and 19th, 2012. He was found guilty of murder by a majority jury verdict in the Central Criminal Court and jailed for life in October 2013.
Solowiow said they had both been drinking, that Mary Ryan started a physical fight and attacked him, and that he was provoked and did not mean to kill her. The appeal concerned how the trial judge directed the jury about his earlier false accounts to gardaí. Dismissing the appeal, Mr Justice John MacMenamin said Solowiow’s account was irreconcilable with the severe injuries to Ryan’s face and body and significant brain damage.
