Unnamed teenager appeals murder conviction of Urantsetseg Tserendorj

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed teenager convicted of murdering Urantsetseg Tserendorj appealed at the Court of Appeal on 28 July 2023, arguing the trial judge wrongly admitted evidence about a later attempted robbery.

Tserendorj was stabbed in the neck on a walkway at Dublin’s IFSC on 20 January 2021, after the teenager attempted to rob her. He was found guilty of murder after a retrial at the Central Criminal Court in November 2022 and was sentenced to life in prison in February 2023, subject to review after 13 years.

The appeal challenged the admission of evidence from a second woman, whom the teenager tried to rob and threatened with a knife shortly after the fatal assault. The defence also argued that remarks in the prosecution’s opening address and other trial issues made the murder verdict unsafe.

The Court of Appeal reserved judgment at the conclusion of the hearing. The supplied reporting gives no later decision on the appeal.
