An unnamed man pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 56 counts of rape and 15 counts of sexual assault. The alleged offences occurred in Co Waterford between December 1983 and June 1988. The proceedings were reported on 24 April 2018.

The complainant told the jury that she confronted her older brother after writing him a letter in 1995. She said she told him she would see him in court. The report said the man was arrested in August 2015 and denied any improper sexual activity with her.

During cross-examination, defence barrister Colman Cody SC questioned the complainant about an alleged rape near a river and noted that the incident was not outlined in her Garda statements. She said she had mentioned river incidents in general terms and that there were many incidents absent from her statements.

The trial continued before Ms Justice Eileen Creedon and a jury.
