Keith Smithers and Peter White were each sentenced to two years in prison for affray outside shops on Barry Road, Finglas. Judge Orla Crowe imposed the sentences at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with each sentence to run from the date the man pleaded guilty.
The affray took place on November 21, 2022. Both men pleaded guilty. The proceedings were reported on January 13, 2026.
CCTV shown to the court captured a third man approaching Smithers and White before an altercation. Garda Niall Mangan agreed with White’s barrister, Karl Monahan BL, that the man approached White, who had two bikes, then grabbed and pulled at a bike before throwing a punch.
The incident involved punching and kicking, and a small screwdriver and a steel pole were produced. Evidence was heard that both defendants used the pole. The court heard that the third man did not make a statement and was fined at the District Court for his involvement.
Smithers had previously received nine years for the unlawful killing and robbery of Brian Hogan on January 13, 2023. White had received four and a half years for the robbery on the same date and was acquitted of the unlawful killing.
Counsel said both men were apologetic and remorseful and asked the judge not to extend their time in custody. The court heard that both had developed drug addictions as teenagers and were working to address them. Judge Crowe noted their serious efforts to deal with addiction.
