This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Two 14-year-old boys denied murdering Ana Kriégel in a derelict house in Lucan on 14 May 2018. The first accused, Boy A, also denied violently sexually assaulting her. The proceedings were reported on 16 May 2019.
The Central Criminal Court heard that gardaí searched Boy A’s home on 24 May 2018 and found a backpack containing a mask, gloves, knee pads and other items. Forensic scientist John Hoade said Ana’s blood was found on the bag, mask, gloves and knee pads. He said DNA matching Ana and Boy A was found inside the mask around the nose and mouth.
Forensic scientist Dr Charlotte Murphy said male DNA found on blue tape on Ana’s body and on a swab from her neck matched Boy A. His defence counsel, Patrick Gageby, asked whether casual intimacy or kissing might leave DNA. Dr Murphy said that would depend on the contact, its duration and whether bodily fluids were involved. She could not determine how the DNA transfer had taken place.
The report said evidence would continue on Monday.
