Trevor Rowe found guilty of Ann Butler’s murder

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Trevor Rowe was found guilty of murdering Ann Butler at the Central Criminal Court, as reported on 11 March 2022.

The jury unanimously rejected Rowe’s defence of intoxication, which argued that drink and drugs had prevented him from forming intent to kill or cause serious injury. The report said jurors reached their verdict after one hour and 19 minutes.

Rowe had pleaded not guilty to murdering Butler at her home on Maudlin Street, Kilkenny, on 20 March 2020. The report said three anonymous 999 calls made five days later were traced back to Rowe; one caller said he had murdered Butler and gave the location of her body.

The Central Criminal Court remanded Rowe in custody until 1 April 2022, when the judge was due to hand down the mandatory life sentence. That sentence had not yet been imposed in the report.
