Trevor Keyes gets suspended sentence for cannabis possession

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Trevor Keyes was given a three-year fully suspended sentence for cannabis possession at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 28 November 2022.

He had pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis for sale or supply at Harold’s Cross Road, Dublin 6, on 23 March 2017.

Judge Elma Sheahan said Keyes was at the lowest rung of the ladder and unlikely to return to court.

The court heard that ten vacuum-packed bags were found in a taxi boot, with the cannabis valued at €99,200.

Detective Garda David McKinley said Keyes was observed driving the taxi, but agreed he was not on the garda radar.

The detective also said Keyes made no money from the incident and was not heavily involved in the drugs trade.

The defence explanation was that Keyes borrowed money, tried to repay it, and was instead asked to do a job.

The sentence was suspended in full, with Judge Sheahan warning that any further offending could activate the three-year term.

The proceedings were reported on 29 November 2022.
