This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Tony Walsh was sentenced to seven and a half years’ imprisonment on 19 July 2016 for raping a boy three times. The proceedings were reported on 21 July 2016.

He had pleaded not guilty to five counts of indecently assaulting the boy in the Circuit Criminal Court. The offences occurred between January 1980 and December 1982, when the boy was aged between 10 and 13. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts after about an hour’s deliberation.

Walsh told the jury that he never knew the boy and had never assaulted him.

The maximum sentence for indecent assault at the time of the offences was two years. Judge Elma Sheahan imposed consecutive sentences. She said the abuse had lasting consequences throughout the victim’s childhood, adolescence and adulthood, and that Walsh had grievously violated his position of trust. She said it was difficult to find mitigating factors given his complete denial, and that he had shown no remorse.

Walsh’s first convictions for sexually assaulting six boys occurred in 1997, when he received ten years, later reduced to six. In 2010, he received sentences totalling 123 years for child abuse, running concurrently with a maximum term of 16 years. The report said he would remain in prison until June 2023 following the latest conviction.
