By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Thomas ‘Nicky’ McConnell was found guilty of murdering Gareth Hutch by the Special Criminal Court, reported on 20 December 2024.

The court found McConnell acted with Jonathan Keogh in the shooting at Avondale House, North Cumberland Street, Dublin, on 24 May 2016. Keogh’s gun fired the fatal shots; McConnell’s gun did not fire, but the court found his preparations showed a shared design to murder Hutch.

The court did not rely on Mary McDonnell’s identification to prove McConnell was the second gunman. It relied instead on mobile phone data, CCTV linking him to vehicles used in the plot, and lies indicative of guilt.

McConnell faced the mandatory life sentence for murder.
