Telstar Investments fined €40,000 over asbestos offence

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Telstar Investments Ltd was fined €40,000 by the Court of Appeal for failing to discharge its employer safety duties, in a judgment delivered on 13 October 2022.

The company had pleaded guilty to breaching workplace safety duties after asbestos tiles were removed at Findlater House in Dublin. The Court replaced the original €7,500 fine, finding it inadequate to reflect the gravity of the conduct and the need for deterrence.

In setting the new fine, the Court took account of the guilty plea, co-operation, remorse and absence of previous convictions. It set a headline fine of €60,000, reduced to €40,000, payable within four months; a separate asbestos risk-assessment offence was taken into consideration.
