Teenager sentenced to life detention for murder of Claudio Robu

A teenager was sentenced to life detention for the murder of Claudio Robu, 39, with a review after eight years. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed the sentence at the Central Criminal Court on 27 May 2021.
The teenager pleaded guilty to murder earlier in 2021. The proceedings were reported on 27 May 2021. He was 16 when he killed Mr Robu on a laneway off Madison Road, South Circular Road, Dublin 8, on 14 September 2020, and was 17 at sentencing.
The sentence provided for a review in June 2028, when a judge would consider probation and education reports and psychological assessments to decide whether he could safely return to society. The reports were to be submitted to the court registrar every two years.
Mr Justice McDermott said the teenager had used “extreme violence” and knew what he was doing. The judge said he had assaulted Mr Robu and returned some hours later to continue the fatal attack, despite having had time to withdraw and think.
The judge noted the teenager’s age, guilty plea, acceptance of moral responsibility and a degree of remorse, as well as his difficult upbringing and progress in addressing drug and alcohol abuse. Reports before the court indicated a high risk of violent reoffending, and the judge said a significant effort by State agencies would be needed to give hope of rehabilitation.
Defence counsel Brendan Grehan SC said the teenager accepted responsibility, had apologised and had been intoxicated on the day of the offence. He asked the judge to consider his client’s early guilty plea, lack of previous convictions, abandonment and anger issues.
