Teenager sentenced to 15 years for murder, with final two years suspended

A teenager who pleaded guilty to murdering Aaron Keating, 43, in Ongar has been sentenced to 15 years in detention, with the final two years suspended subject to conditions. The teenager cannot be named because he was a minor when he first came before the courts.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott said he considered the teenager’s age, lack of maturity and prospects for rehabilitation. He cited the guilty plea and what he described as an early, consistent and apparently genuine expression of remorse among the mitigating factors.

The suspended portion is conditional on keeping the peace after release, addressing addiction needs with probation services and taking part in recommended treatment, including drug rehabilitation and any recommended mental health services. The judge said drug use played a dominating role in the murder; the teenager was considered at high risk of reoffending if returned to the community within 12 months.
