Teenager loses appeal over murder sentence at Court of Appeal

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The unnamed teenager lost an appeal against his life sentence for murder at the Court of Appeal, in a judgment delivered on 28 April 2021.

The teenager had pleaded guilty to murdering Glen “Ossie” Osborne, 20, at Ballybough House in Dublin on 15 April 2020. The court upheld the sentence, which provides for a review after 10 years in custody.

The Court of Appeal found no error in principle in the sentencing judge’s decision. It said the judge had given credit for the guilty plea, remorse and other mitigating factors, while treating the knife brought to the scene as a significant aggravating factor.

The court said the sentence was within the range available to the sentencing judge and dismissed the appeal. Reports are to be prepared every two years for the Central Criminal Court’s review of the teenager’s progress after 10 years in custody.
