Supt Dave Taylor's journalist claims challenged at tribunal

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Supt Dave Taylor's claims about journalists were challenged at the Charleton tribunal on 28 June 2018, during final submissions before its report. The tribunal examined allegations of a smear campaign against Sgt Maurice McCabe.

Taylor had told the tribunal that he spoke to 12 named journalists as part of the alleged campaign. Counsel Michael O'Higgins SC said 10 journalists denied Taylor's account, while two relied on journalistic privilege.

O'Higgins acknowledged that no independent evidence supported claims that former commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan knew about the alleged campaign. The tribunal's public sittings finished on 29 June 2018, with the chairman expected to report in October.
