Stardust inquest hears steel plates blocked toilet windows

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Stardust inquest heard on 24 May 2023 that steel plates had been welded over toilet windows at the club about six weeks before the fire, for security purposes.

The coroner’s court was told that the windows had been built with nine-inch openings intended mainly for ventilation, though a person might have been able to pass through one in an emergency. Vertical bars were also welded outside the windows.

The jury was shown maps, photographs and aerial footage of the complex as part of a presentation of background facts to help it understand later witness evidence.

The available reports describe an inquest hearing and do not report a verdict or other outcome. They do not identify an individual as the subject of this report.
